University City Halle – a Place with a Future

Halle/Leipzig is a metropolitan area with high economic growth. This makes it an attractive place for university graduates and will continue to do so in the future. There are many research institutes located in Halle which collaborate with the Martin-Luther-University. Among them are the Max-Planck-Institute for Microstructural Physicis, a branch of the Fraunhofer-Institute for Material Mechanics, the Institute for Agricultural Development in Central and Eastern Europe and the Institute for Economic Research Halle. In 1999 the Max Planck Society set up an Institute for Ethnological Research in Halle. Intensive collaborative projects and research are done with the following institutes: the Environmental Research Centre Leipzig/Halle Ltd, the Institute for Plant Genetics, the Institute for Cultivated Plant Research in Gatersleben and the Halle Institute for Plant Biochemistry.
This close collaboration of university research with external research institutes is also exhibited by the university’s four networks of excellence which were established in 2005. The concentrate on the following topics:

  • Structures and mechanisms of biological information processes
  • Nanostructured materials
  • Asia and Africa in Global Reference Systems
  • Enlightenment, Religion, Knowledge. Transformation of religion and rationality in the modern era
