Philipp Schwartz-Initiative
16th call for applications
We are pleased to announce the opening of the 16th call for proposals of the Philipp Schwartz Initiative.
Universities, universities of applied sciences and other research institutions in Germany can apply for funding from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to support threatened researchers. Scholars from non-EU countries exposed to significant and acute individual risks can be nominated. Please note that scholars must be nominated by institutions and cannot apply directly.
Nominations are made via the International Office, Dr. Heike Link. The application portal will be open from June 30, 2025. All documents of the persons to be nominated must be sent to heike.link@international.uni-halle.de by August 4, 2025.
Successful institutions will receive funds to grant the nominated scholar research stays in the form of a research fellowship of up to 24 months. No applications can be submitted in the Employment Contract programme line. Successful institutions will also receive a lump sum intended for measures to support Philipp Schwartz fellows in integrating and in re-starting their careers. An extension of up to 12 months can be granted in the framework of a co-financing model. Please find the updated programme documents and further information on the website of the Philipp Schwartz Initiative .
The selection results are expected to be available at the end of November 2025.
Funding can begin on January 1, 2026.
Due to the impact of the ongoing worldwide crises, our partner organisations SAR (e-mail: sar-psi@nyu.edu; please submit your request by 8 August 2025) and Cara (e-mail: info@cara.ngo) can only conduct a limited number of threat assessments. We therefore advise you to contact them as soon as possible. Please note that requests for threat assessments can only be made by nominating organisations.
In the case of Afghan, Sudanese and Ukrainian nominees, a self-report on their at-risk status is sufficient (1 – 2 pages, written and signed by the nominee).
The AvH would also like to remind you that endangerment can also be proven by a corresponding residence status in connection with an asylum procedure in the EU or by a detailed, personal statement from a credible third party (e.g. non-governmental organizations). Please refer to the AvH handout.
