Opening of the Collaborative Research Centre on the ‘Functions of Oxidic Interfaces’

To be launched on 17 January / Halle University in vanguard of central German association

The Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) on the "Functions of Oxidic Interfaces", which was approved in November 2007 by the German Research Foundation, is to be opened officially on Thursday, 17 January 2008 in Halle. The spokeswoman of SFB 762 is Prof. Dr. Ingrid Mertig of Martin Luther  University, Halle-Wittenberg (MLU). The MLU is collaborating in this venture with its partner university in Leipzig, the Max Planck Institute of Microstructural Physics in Halle, and the University  of Magdeburg.

Joint research into special nanostructures should generate new functional uses, and "might as a result lead to a revolution in storage technology," according to Ingrid Mertig.  The research association`s initiative is central to the State Excellence Network on ‘Nanostructured Materials`, which has been established at the MLU.

The opening ceremony is to be held at 3  p.m. on Thursday,  17 January 2008 in the Halle Institute for Agricultural Development in Central and Eastern Europe, at 2 Theodor-Lieser-Strasse. The guests will be welcomed by Prof. Dr. Wulf Diepenbrock, Vice-Chancellor of Martin Luther University, and a representative of the Vice-Chancellor`s office of the University  of Leipzig. Technical lectures will then be delivered by Prof. Dr. Matthias Scheffler of the Fritz Haber Institute in Berlin and Prof. Dr. Jochen Mannhart from the University  of Augsburg, one of the Leibniz laureates of 2008.

SFB 762 will receive some ten million Euro from the German Research Foundation over four years. Additional funding from the states of Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony is also anticipated. Future postgraduates at the SFB will work with state-of-the-art scientific equipment and will study the latest scientific ideas at the International Max Planck Research School for Science and Technology of Nanostructures in Halle.
