Martin Luther University achieves remarkable success in Shanghai rankings
Martin Luther University, Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), and the University of Leipzig were the best placed universities in Eastern Germany in the latest ranking of the 1000 best universities in the world, which is published by the University of Shanghai and is consequently known as the Shanghai ranking. Both institutions found themselves in the range between 203rd and 304th, which places them among the top 30 in the whole of Germany.
The top places in Germany were occupied by Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich (ranked 53rd) and the Technical University, Munich (ranked 56th). A global comparison of universities is carried out every year, based on the following indicators: quality of teaching (alumni who have won a Nobel prize or important mathematics prize), quality of teaching staff (academics who have been awarded a Nobel prize or important mathematics prize, as well as researchers in 21 subject areas whose work is frequently cited), research output (articles published in the specialist journals Nature and Science and in the Web of Science) and size of institutions (academic performance in view of size).
