Preparatory Courses

The branch of the State Department of College Preparation (Landesstudienkolleg) at Martin Luther University prepares foreign applicants, linguistically and technically, for admission to their particular area of study.

The following courses, with their corresponding certificates, are offered:

1. M course: Preparation for medical and biology courses at the university level.
Duration: 2 semesters
Aim: Assessment test

2. T course: Preparation for engineering, mathematics and science courses, except biology, at the university and advanced technical college level.
Duration: 2 semesters
Aim: Assessment test

3. W course: Preparation for economics courses, at the university and advanced technical college level.
Duration: 2 semesters
Aim: Assessment test

4. S/G course: Preparation for courses in linguistics, humanities, arts, and social sciences, at the university and advanced technical college level.
Duration: 2 semesters
Aim: Assessment test

5. DSH course: Preparation for the German language proficiency test for acceptance to the university (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang, or DSH).
Duration: 1 semester
Aim: DSH test

In addition, the test “German as a Foreign Language” (TestDaF, Deutsch als Fremdsprache Test) can be taken in the testing centre, as part of a university preparatory course.

Admission to the preparatory courses occurs in each summer and winter semester. All applicants graduate by passing a language admission test.


Prospective participants for T and W courses must additionally prove themselves in mathematics, by taking an admission test to show their mathematical knowledge.

After successful completion of the admission tests, the Department of College Preparation, the International Students Office or the Center of International Students Management Ltd. will help applicants find a place to live, on arrival in Halle.
