Residence Permit for Germany

As a citizen of the EU and the European Economic Area    you do not need a visa or residence permit to enter Germany.  By registering your place of residence with the Citizens' Service, you enjoy freedom of movement for workers, i.e. you do not need permission to pursue gainful employment.

For entry and residence, foreigners generally require a residence title. The German Rectors' Conference offers you a detailed overview of the  various residence permits for scientists and scholars from non-EU countries in its leaflet "German Residence Law for Scientists and Academics from Non-EU Countries".    You will also find information about the options for accompanying family members.

Citizens from non-EU countries need a visa to enter Germany. To apply for a visa, please contact your local mission abroad   . Please contact the responsible authority in your home country in advance to find out about the respective visa regulations, procedures and required documents, as these may vary.

Further information on visa requirements can be found on the website of the Federal Foreign Office    or on Visa-Navigator   .
