Stages at MLU: 1980-1985 Law Studies

"My name is Tran Van Son. I have studied law at MLU from 1980 until 1985. During the first year, 1980, me and a group of other Vietnamese students have lived in a student dormitory in Weinbergweg and learned German. Afterwards, we were able to study law until 1985. For us, the five years in Halle and at MLU were a very nice and unforgettable time. We remember well the cold winters with snow and all those pretty and old streets in Halle, our good friends, our nice professors and many other incredible experiences.

In 1985, after I returned to Vietnam, I worked as a teacher at Hanoi Law University. During 1988 and 1990 I returned to the GDR to work as an interpreter in Gotha. As of 1993 I live in Hanoi where I work as a lawyer.“

Stages at MLU: 1982-1986 PhD in Economics

Mr. Mai Huy Tan is a member of the Vietnamese alumni group „Club MLU Halle“. After finishing his PhD in the 1980s, he founded the Vietnamese-German Center for Encounter (ZKST), offering German classes via TV. A few years later he brought a piece of German food culture to his home country by founding the first factory for Thuringian sausages in Vietnam along with German business partners. Mr. Tan advocates the German-Vietnamese exchange and has met the former German chancellor, Mr. Gerhard Schröder, and current chancellor Mrs. Angela Merkel. At present, Mr. Tan is involved in several projects among which is the construction of a waste-fired power plant, that generates energy from waste and contributes to reducing emission. The project is a collaboration with a German company.

Even though his PhD in Halle has been a while, he likes to look back upon these times: "I still remember Halle as my second home. Especially my university MLU and my supervisor Mr. Lassmann.“
