Language Courses

German Language Courses

Before and during their stay in Halle, our international students have the opportunity to improve their German language skills. They can choose between German courses at the University Language Centre or German courses at the Institute for German Language and Culture.

German language courses for international students at the MLU Language Centre

The MLU Language Centre offers study-accompanying German courses for all levels of the GER from A1.1 (beginners) to C1.2 (advanced), each lasting 4 lessons per week.

The courses are aimed at all students, doctoral candidates and scientists of Martin-Luther-Universität who would like to improve their German language skills during their stay here.

The courses are free of charge. They take place twice a week between 8.00 a.m. and 8.00 p.m. The courses are accompanied by a phonetics training course and the opportunity to use the Media Library (Mediathek) in the Language Centre.

The placement tests for participants in the German courses at the MLU Language Centre will take place on the following days in the Language Centre (August-Bebel-Str. 13c, 2nd floor):

Thursday, October 10th, 12.00 p.m. and 2.30 p.m.
Monday, October 14th, 5.00 - 6.30 p.m.
Wednesday, Ocotber 16th, 10.00 - 11.30 a.m.

German Language Courses at the Institute for German Language and Culture at MLU

The Institute of German Language and Culture offers preparatory German langauge courses, which take place during the lecture-free period, as well as study related German courses, which take place in the evening during the lecture period. The courses take place in Halle and are subject to a course fee.

Preparatory German Language Course in September 2019

The Institute for German Language and Culture at Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg offers an intensive German language course for students of Martin-Luther-Universität from September 9th to 27th, 2019.

The course focuses on preparing international students for a study at Martin-Luther-Universität. Besides grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation training you will improve your oral and writing skills as well as get information about the city of Halle.

Participation in the course is subject to a fee. The course fee is 396.00 EUR.

You can choose to stay with a host family from Halle for the duration of the course. The overnight fee is 365.00 EUR (incl. breakfast and typical German dinner).

Study Related German Language Courses in winter term 2019/20

During the winter term 2019/20, the Institute for German Language and Culture offers German language courses from level A1 to C2. The classes take place twice a week from 6-8 p.m. and cost 120.00 euros per semester, including the course material.

The courses are designed to help all students who want to improve their language skills during their study stay.

A placement test is offered on October 10th, 2019 for interested students with prior German knowledge who would like to be assigned to a language course level. The test takes place at HS XXII (AudiMax, Universitätsplatz 1) at 13:00 p.m.

Language Tandem

In a Language Tandem, two or more people with different cultural backgrounds can work together to improve their knowledge of German as well as gain a higher understanding of their tandem partners' life, language and culture.

Of course, the services and course offers of the University Language Centre and the University Mediathek are free of charge to use for all international students.

In addition, there are German courses offered by the PhD Network of the University or the Institute for German Language and Culture (for these courses a course fee is charged).
