Residence Permit
Overview
Application
Everybody who comes from a country outside of the EU, who intends to stay longer than 90 days in Germany and does not have a valid visa for the entire duration of his or her stay requires an electronic residence permit (eAT).
The residence permit is a document containing biometric, statistical and personal data and serves digital functions. You can enquire about the biometric data to be stored upon application. You also need to decide whether you wish to activate or deactivate the electronic functions.
Production of the eAT takes around 4 to 6 weeks. You should apply for a residence permit after arriving in Halle and at the latest before your visa expires. To apply, you need the registration certificate [Meldebescheinigung] from the City of Halle (see “Registration in Halle”) and a whole series of other documents, which you can find further below.

Making an appointment with the immigration authority
Before you receive an appointment at the Foreigners' Registration Office, you must submit all the necessary documents to the Foreigners' Registration Office. Once this has been done, you will be given an appointment by the Foreigners' Registration Office. After this appointment, the final preparation and printing of the residence permit will take 4 to 6 weeks.
Individual appointments are made for doctoral students and researchers. We can help arrange such an appointment for you. If you would like this, please send an e-mail to phd.network@international.uni-halle.de.
