Application for a residence permit
Overview
Application
Everybody who comes from a country outside of the EU, who intends to stay longer than 90 days in Germany and does not have a valid visa for the entire duration of his or her stay requires an electronic residence permit (eAT).
The residence permit is a document containing biometric, statistical and personal data and serves digital functions. You can enquire about the biometric data to be stored upon application. You also need to decide whether you wish to activate or deactivate the electronic functions.
Production of the eAT takes around 4 to 6 weeks. You should apply for a residence permit after arriving in Halle and at the latest before your visa expires. To apply, you need the registration certificate [Meldebescheinigung] from the City of Halle (see “Registration in Halle”) and a whole series of other documents, which you can find further below.

The steps for making an appointment with
the immigration authority
In order to apply for a residence permit you will have to go in person to the Foreigners’ Registration Office. To visit the Foreigners’ Registration Office, you need an appointment. To doctoral candidates and researchers individual appointments are allocated. Please find below the steps to get an appointment. We can arrange such an appointment for you. If you wish to do so, please send an e-mail to esther.smykalla@international.uni-halle.de or to phd.network@international.uni-halle.de.
- Go to www.halle.de . This will display the homepage
- Click on ‘Terminvergabe online’ [Make an appointment online]
- Click on ‘Ausländerbehörde’ [Immigration Authority]
- Click on the desired service
- Select available appointment
- Enter details including an email address
- Complete booking
- Your appointment will be definitively booked as soon as you click on and confirm the activation link sent to you by email within 2 hours.
